where can i mail a postcard to diabetes?

I’m participating in WEGO Health’s National Health Blog Post Month (#NHBPM) during the month of November. I’ll be writing 30 posts in 30 days based on the prompts they supply. Learn more here. Wish me luck!

Today’s prompt: “Write a letter to your health…”

Dear Health (in general),

I like you, for the most part. It’s not often that you get me ‘real people sick.’ All of my labs have been coming back a-okay for quite a while now. You don’t require any daily pills at this point in your life. Health, you’re pretty decent, other than a few weird things that you throw at me over the years (MRSA (??), that weird knot on my lower back due to something not showing up in my spine at birth..).

Oooh, wait. You also dealt me the diabetes card. You son of a… gun..

Dear Diabetes (specifically),

You’re an ass.
You cause me to over think things. You make my purse too big. You make me feel bad sometimes. You limit what I let myself eat when you make my blood sugars high. You cause for me to have to be attached to a stupid insulin pump (pumpernickel, I love you. Please don’t shut down on me because I called you stupid). You make me pierce my fingers 10 times a day and squeeze blood out of them.  You make me cry. You make me scream. You make me poorer than I already am. You make me go to the doctor ALL THE TIME and you cause me to worry about my future.

And you’ve not done these things to just me! You’ve done it to millions of others. Worst of all, you do all these things to my little sister, too. I absolutely hate you for that. I’ll never forgive you. Torture me, but don’t torture her, too.

Diabetes, I know you’ve brought some great people into my life. I know my sister and I share a very special bond because of you. I know that you are part of what makes me who I am. But, still – you’re an ass-hat.

Thanks for listening. Please don’t rebel.

Kisses,

Carlyn

  1. As I read your letter, I found myself nodding in agreement. Overthinking… the “stupid pump”… pierced fingertips. I understand it all.

Then I got to the paragraph about your sister, and I got a bit choked up over it. “Torture me, but don’t torture her, too”. Although I can’t relate directly, I share that sentiment when it comes to my own kids. I can handle diabetes, but please don’t come after the ones I love.

    Very well written!

    • Thank you so much for reading, Scott. My sister is very special to me, and much of our bond is due to us both having diabetes, I guess. If I could take it all away from her, I totally would, though. I can’t even begin to imagine the emotions that are tied along to having children. Whew!

  2. Yes, you are a very brave young lady and wise beyond your years…you have handled this diabetes devil with grace and courage…I too teared up for your defense of your little sister, for I love you both dearly…your aunt
